- Additionally, numerous job openings for various target groups have been announced.
- In an interview, recruiter Nicolas provides insights into how the recruitment team works, what makes a good application, and why personality, openness, and a willingness to learn are more important nowadays than a flawless cover letter.
What happens once an application reaches you?
Nicolas: Initially, we check the application for completeness. This includes a résumé, certificates, and, depending on the position, proof of work or academic achievements. For apprenticeships, we particularly focus on school qualifications, such as intermediate school-leaving certificates or high school diplomas. For trainees and professionals, university degrees, work experience, and practical knowledge play a bigger role. We review the documents to make sure they fit the position both formally and substantively. Then, we forward them to the relevant manager, who collaborates with us to decide on the next steps. Suitable candidates are invited to an initial interview. For some positions, such as trainee roles, candidates are invited to an assessment center.
Our goal is always to ensure that every applicant feels guided transparently and respectfully throughout the application process.
A traditional motivation letter is no longer mandatory. Why?
Nicolas: We want to make the application process as straightforward as possible. Therefore, alongside a complete and compelling résumé and current certificates, the personal interview is key for us. We aim to meet the person behind the documents. Of course, anyone is welcome to submit a cover letter if they wish, but it’s no longer required. At the end of the day, what matters most is forming an honest impression of each other - that’s far more valuable than perfectly crafted sentences in a letter.
What should applicants pay special attention to in their résumés?
Nicolas: A well-structured résumé is crucial. It should be complete, listing all positions with starting and ending dates (month and year), and briefly describe each role with two or three bullet points. For instance: What tasks did you have? Which projects were you responsible for? Which tools did you use? The résumé should be up-to-date and tailored to the position you're applying for. For example, if you're applying for a compliance role as a professional, an internship in compliance will naturally be more relevant than a summer job at an ice cream shop. For high school students, the situation is slightly different. All jobs and internships are equally important, as they provide valuable insights into one’s first work experiences or special interests. Honesty is the most important aspect: The details in your résumé should align with what’s reflected in your certificates.
What else do you look for?
Nicolas: Life rarely follows a straight path, and a winding journey is not a disqualifier for successful applications. Career changes or applicants who’ve dropped out of studies and are now seeking training are not obstacles - in fact, they might offer valuable perspectives. We also appreciate it when candidates reveal some personality. Volunteering, hobbies, or special commitments often make for great conversation starters and show who a person truly is.
Which skills are becoming more important in the banking sector?
Nicolas: Alongside technical expertise, "future skills" like digital competency, adaptability, teamwork, and creative problem-solving skills are becoming increasingly significant. With advancements in areas such as artificial intelligence and process automation, many sectors are evolving rapidly. We’re looking for people who are eager to try new things and not afraid to make mistakes. It’s okay if ideas don’t succeed immediately—what matters is learning from experiences and staying persistent. A healthy sense of self-confidence, paired with openness to feedback and personal growth, is crucial. This mindset often comes through when candidates share stories about their school, university, or work projects.
How do you determine in interviews whether someone is a good fit for the team and role?
Nicolas: We usually conduct interviews alongside the respective manager. While the manager focuses on technical qualifications, we as a recruiting team emphasize personal and social skills. This way, both the manager and we can get a sense of whether the candidate is a good fit for the team and the role. It's particularly impressive when candidates ask meaningful questions, show genuine interest, and speak authentically about their motivations. Authenticity resonates with us more than any perfectly rehearsed response.
How important are platforms like LinkedIn or Xing for applicants these days?
Nicolas: These platforms are not necessary for applicants applying to us; a résumé is sufficient. However, for specialist and leadership positions, we use active sourcing to identify profiles on LinkedIn or Xing. Candidates who want to stand out on these platforms should ensure they have a professional photo, a clear headline, and a few concise bullet points about their motivations and project experience. Short but thoughtfully chosen points are often more impactful than lengthy texts. Additionally, these platforms are a great way to showcase your interests, such as involvement in diversity initiatives, sustainability, or digitization. This helps us get a better overall impression of you as a person.
Finally, what personal advice would you give to young applicants?
Nicolas: I encourage everyone to start gaining practical experience early—whether through internships, part-time jobs, or summer work. Not only does this make the transition from school or university to work life smoother, but it also helps you discover your strengths. You’ll quickly find out what you're good at—whether it's independently managing projects, presenting ideas, or diving into analytical tasks. This knowledge is incredibly valuable when it comes to planning your career path. Early experiences provide clarity and confidence for future steps.
In a nutshell: What matters most?
Nicolas: Honesty, motivation, and curiosity are key qualities we look for in candidates. A well-structured résumé and relevant practical experiences are a good foundation, but authenticity and personality in conversations are just as crucial. You don’t need to meet every requirement in the job description upfront—we value candidates who are willing to face challenges and find their path. Practical experiences are an opportunity to learn and grow with the job. The focus is not solely on formal qualifications but on the potential and willingness to develop new skills and grow as a person.
