Factory output surprises, but the gap widens
Industrial production rose 5.2% yoy (Bloomberg consensus: 4.8%) vs 4.5% in July. The beat reflects a partial seasonal recovery as weather disruptions from earlier summer typhoons faded, and as infrastructure-linked manufacturing activity picked up modestly. Yet the headline strength in output sits in contrast to the deterioration in consumption and investment, underscoring a factory sector that is producing into an environment of weakening domestic absorption. The divergence between supply-side resilience and demand-side fragility has become the defining feature of China's 2026 economic narrative.
