A key highlight of the trainee program is the opportunity to spend time at international locations. The assignments are selected in a way that aligns not only with personal interests but also with the program's objectives – an ideal combination for personal and professional growth. With international assignments in major cities like New York, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or European locations, the possibilities are diverse.
During their time abroad, there are various types of tasks and even the opportunity to take on individual projects to support local colleagues. This creates an ideal learning environment to experience work routines and challenges in other countries firsthand. Often, this results in synergies that benefit both the international locations and operations in Germany.
Trainee Christoph Shares His Experience: Eight Weeks at Commerz Global Service Solutions in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
As part of my IDDP (International Digital Development Program) trainee program, I spent eight weeks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, home to our subsidiary Commerz Global Service Solutions (CGSS). This location is becoming increasingly important and now employs nearly 1,000 people – with numbers continuing to grow. CGSS focuses especially on optimizing our backend processes and consistently digitalizing and automating our business workflows. What stands out at CGSS is its emphasis on developing innovative solutions and employing cutting-edge technologies.
My time there passed by quickly, and it was never boring. After completing one project, the next challenge was already waiting. I had the chance to work with both the "Human Resources" team and the "Business Strategy & Support" team. Together with the HR colleagues, I worked on digital solutions to make the recruiting process more user-friendly and efficient. In "Business Strategy & Support," the focus was on creating Excel macros to automate complex data and transfer it into a target document.
Everyday Work and Leisure: Between Cultural Highlights and Culinary Discoveries
Although the projects kept my days busy, there was still enough time to interact with the local colleagues. This included various shared lunch or dinner outings, sampling Malaysian snacks in the office, or simply coming together during breaks.
And outside of work? Kuala Lumpur is a vibrant city that blends tradition and modernity. When I wasn’t exploring its many cultural sights, I was indulging in the variety of culinary delights the city has to offer.
In addition to my time in Kuala Lumpur, I also visited the nearby island of Langkawi, as well as Penang and Singapore. I spent the remaining weekends getting to know Kuala Lumpur in depth and playing tennis matches with my colleagues.
Looking Back at an Unforgettable Experience
An international assignment at Commerzbank is a valuable opportunity. The exchange and collaboration not only foster professional growth but also facilitate personal development. Many of the connections and friendships formed during this time last far beyond the trainee program itself. Particularly in times of digital transformation, international collaboration generates numerous ideas and solutions that can be implemented in global projects.
