We know that we can only succeed as part of an intact and cohesive societal and ecological system. That is why environment and society have long been an integral element of our corporate culture.
We promote environmental protection in our core business, for example by funding renewable energies and through emissions trading. We also systematically seek ways to reduce the resources we consume in the bank. To this end, we have implemented a groupwide, certified environmental management system. Our primary objective and a part of our overall climate strategy is to reduce CO2 emissions. Thanks to a number of measures in facility management and mobility in particular, we have already been able to pare down 67% of the greenhouse-gas emissions in comparison to 2007. Remaining greenhouse-gas emissions are being compensated for through the purchase and retirement of high-quality CO2 certificates. As such, Commerzbank has been working in a climate-neutral manner since 2015.
For our social engagement, we maintain many links to the environment we operate in. We have launched numerous projects and initiatives in cooperation with partners from politics, business and society and thus have helped to solve concrete problems. We firmly believe that everyone involved – the state, business and society – can only tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow by working together. Commerzbank is particularly committed to education and sports. Many of our employees help with our programmes by volunteering in their spare time. Besides the bank's own activities, we support sustainable academic, cultural and social projects through our nine foundations, which are coordinated by the Commerzbank Foundation Centre.
